Festa das Varas do Fumeiro or Festival of the Smoking Rods is held annually in the small village of Aranhas, or Village of the Spiders, in Central Portugal. The festa is a celebration of all things smoked. Cheese and meat take pride of place in this culinary extravaganza. This usually sleepy village opens it’s doors, streets, forgotten museums and even garages. Pop-up shops offer artisan crafts, delicious honey, cheese and of course smoked meat of every kind. The sausage fillings included game and bread, Chouriço (Chorizo) and Morcela (black pudding). The boys were in their element and couldn’t get enough of the samples of tasty meat on offer. The cheese was pretty amazing too!
We visited the festa last week when music filled the air and a multitude of musicians performed impromptu gigs. There were processions, lots of processions and so much music, singing and dancing. Sausages of every kind were guided through the streets held proudly aloft on their smokehouse rods, taking pride of place in this three day long celebration. After a busy day the boys had full tummys and needed their sleep. I’m pretty sure they dreamed of Chouriço that night as the party continued until long after midnight, as a good Portuguese festa should of course!
