Festival das Sopas, Proença-a-Velha, Portugal

You only need to live in Portugal for a short time to realise that sopa, soup, really is the foundation of everything. Portuguese life revolves around soup. Children are weaned on it, every meal begins with it, and a day is not a day without a good healthy portion of soup. So surely the greatest festival of all, has got to be centred around this magical meal?
We visited the Festival of soup today to peruse the artisan products, listen to the local piano accordion music; typical groups from Idanha-a-Nova, UNESCO’s Creative City of Music; and of course sample some of the amazing soups on offer. There were 130 showcased at the festival, a small selection of the local favourites. The competition really heats up tomorrow when you have to place your vote for the best soup showcased. Who ever knew that soup would be so amazingly popular in a country that experiences sweltering hot summers!
We did sample some of the amazing soup on offer and wood fired pizza for dinner. At €1 a slice for freshly made pizza, you couldn’t really go wrong. We treated the boys to some dried fruits for dessert. Yum. then some more music, a little dancing and a chance to meet some of the locals.

Hi Andrea, I do enjoy a nice bowl of soup in winter, I could even go as far to describe it as my favourite type of winter food (almost), but I’m not sure about in summer. How funny that there is actually a festival to celebrate the humble bowl of soup. The pizza looks a bargain. I bet that lady has a tale or two to tell!
xx

The portrait of the lady is stunning! Although all your photos are wonderful. It looks like another great festival, especially if you like soup. #MySundayPhoto

Those dried fruits look amazing.
I’d never heard of a festival of soup before! What a wonderful idea and some mouth-watering images.
I’ve never heard of a soup festival before but how amazing if you get to try them all. I wonder if you’d feel a bit like a sloshy tank afterwards 🙂
