Festival of Azietie e Fumeiro, Proença-a-Velha

Festival of Azietie e Fumeiro Proença-a-Velha
Portugal is rightly proud of it’s rich history, food, drink and traditions and takes every opportunity to celebrate them by throwing a party. Here in Portugal you can visit a different Festa (festival) every weekend, we have visited so many already this year. The latest festa in our nearby village of Proença-a-Velha celebrated Azeite e Fumeiro, Olive Oil and Smoked Sausages.
Proença-a-Velha is a tiny village in central Portugal with a beautifully preserved olive mill where the festa was held. We took the opportunity to explore the ancient olive oil press and working museum, dedicated to protecting the heritage of the Beira Baixa Olive Oil industry.
Over the course of the annual two day festa there were live workshops educating you on how to produce bio olive oil and a market of artesan crafts and products. There were samples of olive oil and meats and of course there was no shortage of music and entertainment. There was even a free bouncy castle for the children. The boys loved the opportunity to sample all of the produce. In fact, they probably loved it a little too much and we had to hold them back from sneaking an extra handful of yummy chouriço and double dunking in the delicious bio olive oils.

Well I do like my olive oil. I thought you were going ot say this was a fiesta just before the start of Lent. Creating bio olive oil took me rather by surprise. I do love the picture of your little one with the olive press at the bottom. #mysundayphoto
Hi Andrea, it sounds like another fun and interesting festival. I love it when an area takes pride in what they have to offer and it is more often than not, so simple. Shop bought olive oil doesn’t compare to freshly pressed. My two were bought up dunking fresh bread into locally produced olive oil with a little salt sprinkled. You can’t beat it.

I love seeing how different countries celebrate their heritages – it looks like a great time was had. Love the image of the women chatting. #MySundayPhoto
Is Aziete those small seeds that can give food the color red? In my country (Philippines) they are called that. We are discovered by A Portuguese and colonized by Spain so this reminds me of home =) #mysundayphoto
