Fonte do Pego, Portugal

Set inside a gorge full of fossils, a short walk from a preserved traditional millers house with a working watermill stone and overlooked by Penha Garcia castle you will find the most spectacular natural swimming pool. Fonte do Pego has to be the best way to cool down ever. A beautifully crafted swimming hole utilising the natural flowing waters of the river with the added bonus of a waterfall to swim underneath!
The pool is alongside a Fossil route in the Naturtejo Geopark and this amazing wild swimming hole has been carefully carved out of the rock that surrounds it. The water here seemed warmer than the nearby faster flowing river beaches and was a welcoming sight after our walk. We were lucky enough to have had the place to ourselves and after a swim the boys had lots of fun climbing and sliding on the rocks. Just along from the pool is a fossil museum and working ancient mill. If you time it right you can still see the power of the water turning the millstone to grind flour. As we headed back along the Ruta de Fosseis (Fossils walk) to the car park located next to the dam, we spotted loads of amazing looking fossils high on the gorge.

A working mill! Just awesome. And as for that waterfall, well I couldn’t have resisted a swim as well! Do love your images from Spain and Portugal. They are maazing.

Thanks Emma, Central Portugal rarely gets very busy, it’s a great place to visit and live if you like peace and quiet!
Oh my goodness, what an amazing place! I bet swimming in that pool was very refreshing. Was there anything (non human) in it?

The swimming pool was so refreshing, luckily there were only a few fish in there, oh and a couple of huge plastic fossils!
