Idanha-a-Nova Lake

Fun Times at Idanha-a-Nova Lake, Castelo Branco, Central Portugal

Idhana-a-Nova in Central Portugal is a remote and ancient part of Portugal and home to a spectacular lake.  Idhana-a-Nova lake is within the perimeters of the Geopark Naturejo, which forms part of the Global Network of National Geoparks created by UNESCO.  Geoparks are a  place where geological heritage is connected to broader aspects of the natural and cultural environment, which are often determined by geology and landscape. This area is almost in Spain and surrounded by ancient, and significant historical villages, such as Idanha-a-Velha and Monsanto, where you can find fantastically preserved Roman remains and beautiful villages with a rich history.

Idanha-a-Nova Lake is now probably most famous for holding the biannual Boom Festival, during which the lake itself provides the most amazing natural backdrop for a variety of dance stages. Festival time is definitely the only occasion when the area is crowded, as although Idhana-a-Nova is one of the largest municipalities in Portugal the population is small. If you drive or cycle around the shore a little you can usually always find yourself a private spot by the lakeside. A wonderful and tranquil location for escaping the sun, shading yourself underneath the lakeside oaks and olives, wild swimming in the surprising warm water and watching the plentiful birds and wildlife.
